Map of Tongatapu
TONGA'S main island is Tongatapu, located in the south of the Tongan archipelago. This island is sometimes referred to simply as 'Tonga', and the whole archipelago known as 'the Kingdom'. The capital city is Nuku'alofa, which is sited on the northern coastline, a quiet yet vibrant town with shops, cafes, hotels, tour operators, banks and offices.
Things to see on Tongatapu
- The Royal Palace and Royal Tombs in Nuku'alofa.
- Some of the best beaches in Tongatapu are on the north-western coastline, with resorts from budget to mid-range.
- Spectacular blowholes are located at Houma on the beautiful cliff coastline along the south.
- Caves and beaches are found on the east coast.
- Visit Captain Cook's Landing and ancient grave sites on the north-east of the island.
- The island is quite flat so relatively easy to get around by push-bike. Or hire a car from the airport or in town.
- Friends Cafe right in town is a great place for meals and Italian coffee. One can also book day trips here (see below).
- Take a day trip to one or more of the little islands off Nuku'alofa. Fafa Island Resort is upmarket and great for short or long stays, Pangaimotu is more low-key. Royal Sunset Island Resort is another good island resort. Ferries are found in Nuku'alofa.
- Spend a day or so on the island of 'Eua, a large island east of Tongatapu. Ferries go from Nuku'alofa. The island has a national park great for hiking.
The word Tonga means 'south' and the word tapu means sacred, forbidden or holy. Therefore this island was in ancient times known as the sacred place in the south. Today it remains the seat of the royal family, and the main palace on the waterfront of Nuku'Alofa is a well-known landmark.
Book flights via Chathams Pacific to see the northern island groups of Ha'apai, Vava'u or even the remote Niuatoputapu in the far north.
