Tonga Islands Map
THE islands of Tonga are generally quite small compared with some Pacific islands and in fact Tonga is one of the most densely populated island nations in the South Pacific. However, it is hard to imagine, as even the main island has a quiet island atmosphere where life is at a slow pace, activities are mainly agricultural or self-subsistence, and the people relaxed and friendly.
Tonga Location Facts
- There are four main island groups - Tongatapu, Ha'apai, Vava'u and the Niuas in the far north.
- Tonga is low-lying. The highest point is found on the volcano island of Kao west of the Ha'apai Islands; 1,033 metres.
Pigs can be spotted in most Tongan townships. Unlike other parts of the South Pacific, they are mostly unpenned and can be seen wandering around the quiet roads. They seem to act as the country's street cleaners and are fun to watch, especially the little piglets following closely behind their mothers!
A holiday in these beautiful islands provides many unique and fascinating insights into the friendly Tongan culture.
