Accommodation and Activities: Do not expect traffic, state of the art technology or 5-star hotels. Ha'apai is a South Pacific island paradise where it is still possible to kayak to a deserted island, snorkel or dive pristine reefs, watch humpback whales out to sea (seasonal) and experience local Tongan friendliness and culture. Most accommodation comprises budget beach fales or guesthouses. However on the northern tip of Foa can be found the Sandy Beach Resort, which offers the top accommodation option in Ha'apai, with comfortable bungalow accommodation for couples seeking a tranquil vacation. The resort has a beautiful beach with views to the volcanoes of Kao and Tofua on the western horizon. A nearby dive operation offers fishing, diving or whalewatching tours. The well-run Matafonua Lodge just up the road offers a budget accommodation option and can accommodate families as well as backpackers and other budget travellers.
Don't miss a stroll around Pangai, with its quiet almost deserted streets, quaint Colonial buildings and small fishing harbour.
